I am Shannon Morgan and I identify as a woman. I have lived and worked in a deeply rural area in the Eastern Cape for the last 9 years. My passions are rural health, mental health and inclusive development. I am currently the Project Coordinator for a Community Based Inclusive Development Programme that supports the inclusion and participation of people with disabilities in their family and community life. Since 2014, we have identified over 900 people with disabilities, and just over 400 people receive regular follow up from the Community Disability Worker in their community. Children with disabilities are now attending pre-schools in the area and over 70 people are part of community based savings and credit groups.
Through my work with Rural Rehab South Africa (RuReSA) and as the chairperson of the Rural Mental Health Campaign, I have found that advocacy is what inspires me to wake up in the morning. Currently, I have no plans to leave Zithulele Village and am quite settled living near the ocean in my blue rondavel.
