Programme Officer: Socio-Political Economy at TEKANO
Ibrahim Steyn joined TEKANO in June 2017. He has strong knowledge of South Africa’s civil society and socio-political context. Steyn was an AW Mellon Foundation postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cape Town, between 2015 and 2017. His research interests are in the area of political sociology, including local governance and social change, state-civil society relations, and social movements.
Steyn is a political activist. He cut his political teeth in the student movement as a member, and later a leader, of the South African Students Congress (SASCO). He has also held leadership positions in the South African Communist Party and the Young Communist League of South Africa. He is currently working on a book manuscript on power relations in social movements in South Africa.
